Satellite constellations with intermittent coverage are generally useful for specific communication applications such as store-and-forward messagery or short voice transmission. Non-permanent coverage occurs only for non-geostationary orbits and when there are less satellites than the minimum number required for continuous coverage (see section 6.1.5.2), or when their number is large enough but when their relative placement is not optimized. A worst case is achieved with a constellation reduced to only one satellite. Depending on the altitude and the minimum elevation angle, typical average gaps in low-Earth orbits range from about 10 hours at 5 elevation and mid-latitudes with one satellite, to less than one hour with four satellites and about one half hour with six satellites. More quantified results require precise definitions of the zones of interest and of the constraints, together with specific numerical simulations. Generally, the constellations that are optimal for permanent coverage are not optimal for non-permanent coverage, but they generally provide fairly good initial conditions for the optimization process.

As discussed earlier in this chapter, the limitation of a TE LSP to a single IGP area is caused by the limited visibility into the topology at the LSP head end. However, once a path is specified, there is no problem signaling it across IGP areas or across ASs. Therefore, the setup of interdomain LSPs is possible without any extensions, e.g. by computing the path offline and specifying the hops at the head end. The problem with this approach is that it forces a service provider to move to an operations model relying on offline computation for both the primary and secondary paths, with the implications discussed in section on offline computation in the TE chapter.2 In addition, the issue of fast reroute is not addressed in

Point-source indirect luminaires often use linear sources, such as T2 , T3, and T4 tungsten-halogen lamps; ED18, T6, T7, and T15 metal halide lamps; and ED18 and T15 HPS lamps. Diffuse-source indirect luminaires use compact, T5, T8, and T12 fluorescent lamps. Fluorescent uplights (figure 12.35) were developed primarily to provide an evenly illuminated ceiling similar to the recessed luminous ceiling (figure 12.18). The intent is the same: to create an evenly illuminated ceiling plane without variations in luminance on the ceiling surface.

apturing light is the essence of photography. In fact, the name used to describe the craft, photography, is a combination of the Greek words photo meaning light and graphi meaning writing, so photography is fundamentally light writing. You use lenses and cameras and storage devices to capture those images that tell your visual stories and for many photographers, that s what photography is all about the gear. I know I was certainly that way when I started my photography career. I thought photography was more about the gadgets than actually capturing light in all its many forms. Fortunately, at some point I began to see light in a new way and that shift has profoundly affected my photographic work and made it more fun. I want to share that shift in thinking with you, along with various practical ways for you to manage, manipulate, and expose the light.
